Winter Water

On a February afternoon I headed out along Hyalite Creek, but I was not to travel far. I soon left it to backtrack a small, nameless tributary, perhaps little different from hundreds of others in this mountain valley, but the first to greet me. I delighted in the reversal of the tonal terms of my waterfall studies, which were white water amid dark surrounding rock. Now, moving up the stream, the bright snow and ice seemed sometimes a frame for the dark water, and sometimes subject against the water's ground. Turbulence here and there brought life to that otherwise depthless black. I saw echoes of cirrus in the flow, the swirls turned to galaxies and nebulae. Noticing the yang in that yin, I also became more aware of the darknesses in the white, giving it form or hinting at its opposite beneath.
